Kansas BLOB for a LOB

Nice Baseline Out of Bounds play run by Bill Self's Kansas Jayhawks against the Memphis Tigers to get Cole Aldrich a dunk.

I see too many teams pass on this great scoring opportunity and simply run a play to get the ball in. Unless you are running some clock - take advantage and run a play to SCORE!

The Redlands/Grinnell System

TheRedlandsGrinnellplayeverybodygoreallyfastandgiveupalotofpointssoyoucanscorealotofpointsSystem That is what some people have named the system that leads the nation in scoring over the past few seasons. At Basketball-tips.com , I recieve dozens of questions about the Grinnell(Redlands) System of play. So I thought that here may be a good spot to discuss the system, as I see it. First off, I went to the Redlands/La Sierra game last night. 172-107 - Redlands. They had 93 at the half - and went thru a cold spell. Scored their 101st point at the 18:36 mark in the 2nd half. Played 21 guys - 14 of them over 10 minutes. Did not play most of their top ten in the final 10 minutes. Did not really press full court in the final 4 minutes. Probably could have scored 200. Honest. After seeing them play a dozen or so times in the past 3 seasons, this is what I can discern from watching. At the end of the season I intend to sit down with Coach Gary Smith and pick his brain some. He is one ...

Play Hard

When we coach young kids there are a few premises that we need to keep in mind: 1. Players participate for a variety of different reasons. 2. It's rarely going to mean as much to them as it does to you. 3. We do not know what 100% is for each kid - only they can tell us. 4. Players don't know how much they have to give until they've experienced it. 5. Sometimes we won't get 100% but we should strive to get more than yesterday. If we can create an environment where it is fun to try without the fear of failure, kids will begin to give us a little better effort every day. And the funny thing is - it doesn't really change much as they get older. I heard an interview recently with the Washington State point guard, Derrick Lowe. The legendary coach Dick Bennett retired and the job was passed to his son, Tony. Both are GREAT coaches. Lowe was asked why they were having such a great season after being picked last in the Pac 10 preseason poll. He said, "Last year we tri...

2 Guard

2-Guard is a continuity offense designed to allow four perimeter players equal opportunity to be in all spots at sometime during the continuity. This is the initial cut and the basic ball reversal. Four players need to be able to function on the perimeter and it helps if the high post is a decent passer, as you will see later. Over the next couple weeks we'll add some options and specials that make this a pretty comprehensive offense that you can build on and use from the youth level on up. Check back soon.
